Although President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery inon this day inMajor General Gordon Granger of the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas, to declare the end of the Civil War and issue a long-awaited order freeing the remaining slaves in Texas.
On this special day, and every day, we at United Way of Miami-Dade stand with our Black community against racism in all of its forms. As we are all too painfully aware, there is still much work to be done. We commit to being part of this critical work right here in Miami.
