The barbershop quartet based in Fullerton has performed together for several years. They do everything from corporate events to birthday parties. Audience members listen to a performance by the Sugar Daddies Barbershop Quartet during a summer series concert at the Fullerton Arboretum.

Individually, these four men are exceptional vocalists with passions for performing and storytelling. His mother jokes he regularly sang off key. But Nichols sang through elementary, junior and high school.

In college, he and fellow choir members living in the Bay Area sang barbershop. When Nichols moved to Fullerton inhe got an engineering job at Hughes Aircraft, which was later bought out by Raytheon.

After jumping from quartet to quartet within the chorus those first years, he and three others formed the Tuesday Night Quartet. Before pursuing a career in computer science, Lowerre studied music at Cal State Fullerton.

He started singing barbershop for the Orange Empire Chorus in the mids. More than 30 years ago, Derler was given a barbershop learning tape by a friend who sang in a quartet.

He sang in church choirs and junior high choruses, and learned about vocal production as a teenager at Fullerton Union High. Several years ago, though, Evans met friends at Hillcrest Park.

You arrange the lead part, then figure out the bass, put the tenor above the melody and the baritone gets whatever is left over. He really completes the quartet nicely.

Lowerre suggested the Sugar Daddies, for its members are sweet and committed to sticking together for the long haul. Because the group practices only one night a week, learning certain songs — and perhaps more importantly, feeling comfortable enough to perform them — can take months, Evans said.

Formerly a classic rock and country music fan, Derler said he now listens mostly to barbershop learning tracks in his spare time. The Sugar Daddies perform at birthday parties for the young and the old.

Corporate Christmas gatherings. They also mentor aspiring barbershop singers at local high schools. Others are embarrassed, but most people love it.
